Biography

Lauri Tiainen (1988) is a painter from Vantaa, Finland, who works mainly with oil and watercolour painting and drawing. He draws inspiration from observing his own environment and things in everyday life such as people, music, nature and other artists.

Lauri is currently finishing his MFA studies at the University of Fine Arts Helsinki. He has also studied at the Community College in Orivesi, Finland, in 2014-2015 and has graduated as a Visual Artisan from Pekka Halonen Academy in 2014, Finland.

Lauri lives in Vantaa and works in Helsinki.

‘The subject of my paintings usually arises while I do it. I don't always know what it will be. For me, the subject can be a certain colour, an image, or a simple shape, for example an organic stonelike circle. I could call my process intuitive and I always go step by step, sometimes I know what I’m doing and sometimes I lose the red thread completely. For me, painting is a dialogue, a bit like a conversation with shapes and colours. I want them to convey to the viewer a certain kind of joy of doing, those moments of realization when the pieces fall into place and the painting finds its own look. I’m looking for a moment when it goes beyond my own thinking and there is the feeling that I couldn’t have planned it in advance. It’s a moment when painting seems to me alien and familiar at the same time. ‘
