Welcome!

MUSE ESCAPES is Marika Maijala’s first solo exhibition that catches a glimpse of her multidisciplinary artistic practice through drawing, painting, animation, narrative installation and performance. The collage of memories and impressions contains reflections on autobiographical art, the possibility and problem of representation as well as several cases of a lost muse.

“Maybe for me this portrait was a way to deal with my feelings about what happened. I often do that - I pour my feelings, especially the repressed ones,
into my art. It works for me, but maybe then I just escape the possibility of
a dialogue that might change everything. Now that I think about it, it seems even
a little cowardly. However, now that portrait I painted of you was my way of entering a dialogue with you.” (Conversation with a muse, 2022)

“Dear Artist, greetings from Nice! It is beautiful here. The sea is bluer than you ever could paint.” (Letter from Aubergine, 2022)

“Haluun maata tässä aina / sun lonkeroiden kanssa” (Jostain muualta, 2022)

Marika Maijala (1974) currently works in the Artists’ House on Harakka Island, Helsinki, and studies painting at the Free Art School Helsinki. Her artistic practice draws from play, experiment and trial and error in the spirit of DIY. Her main creative sources are the realm of narration, which she loved already as a child, as well as her relationships with other creatures. Maijala’s versatile body of work includes picture books, art books, paintings, drawings, texts, animations, videos, installations and illustrations for public spaces.

Maijala has received several awards and nominations for her work as a children’s book illustrator, for example the Rudolf Koivu award for best children’s book illustration twice (2009 and 2019) and the Finnish State Award for Illustration Art in 2020. Her debut book as a children's book author, Ruusun matka (2018), was a nominee for the Nordic Council Children’s and Young People’s Literature Prize and was presented in the Bologna Illustrators’ Exhibition. Her stories and illustrations have been published worldwide.
