“Intuitive manipulation of material and curiosity towards the process form the basis of my artistic work. As a craftswoman, my work manifests in a physical form, but the process of making them is equally important for my artistic thinking. I am still in the process of getting used to the untrustworthiess of glass as a material. It shapes my making and my connection to my work.
I make jewelry and sculpture both of which have some qualities of potential function, yet they are somehow unsettling and dangerous. I find this balance intriguing. Glass in itself is full of these polarities; it is both mundane and luxurious, durable but sometimes brittle, soft when molten and hard when cooled down.
I am interested in the concepts of durability and temporality in time in my work.”
Kati Peltola (1989) is a glass artist who graduated from Aalto University’s Contemporary Design master’s program in 2020, in Helsinki, Finland. She works in her studio in Alppiharju, Helsinki.
